Seen in this light, Hamlet’s struggle becomes a fascinating study of a rational, though passionate, mind attempting to understand his world and its divine powers in a naturalistic sense instead of the more frequently played irrational and powerless plunge into a current of madness. Hamlet is here regarded as a student of Humanism itself, with the belief that every human being has the explicit duty of non-resignation to the forces of evil. When called to act upon his beliefs, Hamlet’s calamity becomes a question between the mere possession of ideals and acting upon them. Russian-trained Irina Templeton challenges the common and contemporary analysis of the Hamlet by incorporating ideas from Boris Pasternak’s 1940 translation. Best known for his novel Dr. Zhivago, Pasternak’s vision of Hamlet center’s heavily on the Religious Humanist doctrine for the fullest personal development of the capacities for reason, love and wisdom. The Centre for Creative Initiatives is staging Hamlet at the Kay Meek Centre from April 22 – 25. It will be a community event that includes more than just a stage production. The Centre for Creative Initiatives will open several rehearsals to the public and, as well, hold a public educational workshop entitled “The Shakespeare Matrix” – An interactive approach to connecting with Shakespeare”. Our aim is to engage people of all ages in dialogues and conversations that will support and enrich culture, theatre and art education in the community. We welcome your support and look forward to seeing you at our production. |
